Internet Marketing on the Cheap

I frequent a Nursery near my home, and one of the things I enjoy doing as I check out is to re-read a well-worn piece of paper and the quote that it contains.

“There is hardly anything in the world that some man cannot make a little worse and sell a little cheaper,
and the people who consider price only are this man's lawful prey.”

John Ruskin

Pinching a Penny with Internet MarketingI have been noticing a troubling trend within the community of Internet marketing suppliers. There are tremendous pressures to push solutions forward that are cheap and not effective in order to “win” business. And there is a growing thought that Internet marketing can be applied to any client without delving into the clients business to understand what is needed for them to be successful. “Let’s just slap some PPC here, a bit of SEO there, and maybe a dash of Social Media.”

Even more interesting is that I’ve run into business owners who are exhibiting the same tendencies. Don’t bother me with the penetrating questions; just tell me what you can do for me. Unfortunately Bubba, not much.

We have rescued several clients from such scenarios, but the sad part is that it fulfills that age-old saying, “They chased good money after bad.” The wise choice is to get it right the first time. The end result is what you were looking for in the first place.

Listen, I understand that we are all bargain shoppers. Just look at the Wal*Mart phenomena and that will become clear. Selecting based on price can get you into a world of hurt, especially when you trust the marketing of your business to a cut-rate company.

Internet Marketers are a professional services provider industry just like your doctors, attorneys, and accountants are. None of these professions provide a “commodity” service. Neither do Internet Marketers.

What is important to a business owner, or marketing professional, is that their Internet marketing works. You are acquiring leads, your Internet traffic conversions are growing, and your target demographic is finding you in increasing numbers. The bargain basement companies are essentially conducting a “hit and run” operation. It’s impossible for them to give you the personalized time and attention to do this thing right at the price they are quoting. It’s like going to a third-world country to get your heart bypass surgery performed.

Don’t blame the cheap company. Pull the mirror in front of your face and ask what in the world were you doing when you were trying to squeeze money in an area as important as this.
